Pennhurst Asylum

Pennhurst Asylum in Spring City, PA, is one of the top-rated, high-intensity haunted attractions in the country — housed inside a former institution that closed in 1987 following decades of scandal. The building’s real history and reputed paranormal activity set a tone that no amount of set design could replicate. During the fall season, thousands of guests pass through each show night, often spending as much time waiting in the outdoor queue as they do walking through the attraction itself.

Knabe Labs was brought in to design and install an outdoor lighting and sound system that transforms the queue experience from a wait into a show. DMX-controlled wall washes line the front of the building, running a looping light show that keeps the facade alive as guests move through the line. On the corners of the building, three 480-watt moving heads simulate searchlights scanning the grounds — mapped in DMX software to sweep the queue line without hitting guests’ eyes, all running on a CueServer for reliable, repeatable playback.

On the audio side, a 70V QSC amplifier drives zoned sound to speakers positioned around the building, with audio content playing directly from the CueServer. The result is a layered atmospheric system that builds tension long before guests ever step inside — turning dead queue time into part of the haunt itself.
